1: Introduction to the SGI InfiniteStorage 4000
InfiniteStorage 4000 RAID Features
The InfiniteStorage 4000 RAID system is a mass storage system using Fibre Channel
(SCSI-protocol) disks. All drive arrays are fibre channel attached.
While the form and function of the InfiniteStorage 4000 are very similar to other SGI
RAID products such as the TP9300/TP9300S or TP9500/TP9500S, it is important you
note the following:
Serial ATA drives (such as those used in TP9300S or TP9500S) are not compatible
with InfiniteStorage 4000 Fibre Channel (SCSI-protocol) disks and should never be
used as spares in InfiniteStorage 4000 Fibre Channel (SCSI-protocol) drive arrays.
Fibre Channel (SCSI-protocol) drives cannot be used as spares in serial ATA
enclosures.
The 3992/3994 RAID controller interface used in an InfiniteStorage 4000 has a
different form factor than RAID controllers used in the interface on other SGI RAID
products. The difference can also be confirmed by special marking or part numbers
on the 3992/3994 RAID controller canister.
The InfiniteStorage 4000’s 3992/3994 RAID controllers cannot be used as spares
or replacements for other SGI RAID controllers.
The expansion enclosures contain environmental status modules instead of RAID
controllers. Each environmental status module contains an environmental services
monitor board (ESM) and two slots for SFPs (small form-factor pluggables). The
ESM board is the interface between the controller enclosure and the expansion
enclosure. The ESMs used in InfiniteStorage 4000 are not interchangeable with
those used in the SGI TP9300, TP9500, or TP9700 products.
Serial ATA ESMs and Fibre Channel (SCSI-protocol) ESMs are not interchangeable.
